Join the MoD for a free event exploring Canadian Black History. Families and adults alike are invited to a reading of the book The Lucie and Thornton Blackburn Story with local author and children’s educator Suzette Daley. Explore the story further by engaging in a hands-on archaeology activity, and a Q&A with the author following the reading.
This program is open to all, however, due to some historical themes discussed we recommend audience members be 8+. If you have any questions about the program, please contact a member of the programming team at education@dufferinmuseum.com.
About the Author
Suzette Daley is a storyteller, published author, and passionate literacy advocate. She has experience working with both adults and children and volunteers her time to assist in boosting literacy skills in her community.
In addition to her work in literacy, Suzette has a particular interest in highlighting the experiences of people of color. Her work “The Story of Lucie and Thornton Blackburn,” is based on the true-life experiences of freedom seekers who escaped enslavement in Kentucky and later founded Toronto’s first taxi company, “The City.” Their story is one of resilience, entrepreneurship, and community building, and Suzette’s vivid storytelling brings their legacy to life.
Suzette is also the founder of Mini-Intel Tutoring, based in Shelburne, Ontario. Her program is designed to provide children with the tools and resources they need to succeed in school and beyond.
